Mushrooms are delicious and they are a healthy food. I have watched many mushroom cooking videos, and I also have some experience in my own kitchen. Some people prefer to cook their mushrooms in boiling water, while others like using a pot of oil. However, it is my opinion that the best way to prepare mushrooms is to use butter with salt and pepper infused freshly squeezed lemon juice. It makes the flavor of the mushroom rich, and gives them a great texture as well. In this article, I will share with you the best method for Mushrooms Cooking so they are juicy and delicious.

But there are a lot of ways to prepare these fungi. The best way to enjoy them is by cooking them properly so that they don’t become too watery or tasteless when the sauce is poured over them. Here, we will show you an easy way on how to do this.

Sautéed Mushrooms - Easy Recipe

What is the healthiest way to cook mushrooms?

The healthiest way to cook mushrooms is to boil them in a pot of water. Boiling the mushrooms in a pot of water reduces the saltiness and the natural liquid content of the fungus. This helps in keeping their flavor intact and also their benefits for your body. Boiling makes sure that the mushrooms do not release any extra water which otherwise can cause your dish to be too watery when you pour over the sauce or add seasoning to them.

Ingredients You Will Need For This Recipe

The ingredients you need for this recipe are very simple and easy to manage. All you need are the following:

About 1 pound of button mushrooms, sliced into long pieces. You can also use any other type of mushroom if you want. But button mushrooms taste the best in my personal experience and opinion.

1/4 cup vegetable oil for cooking the mushrooms along with about 1 teaspoon of salt and pepper each.

A pinch of cayenne pepper and a teaspoon of garlic powder

Juice from 1-2 lemons. Fresh lemon juice is always the best, but using bottled juice is also okay.

1 onion, chopped finely. You can use red onion for more flavor or white onion for less flavor. However, I find that white onions taste better with mushroom than red onions. So use white onions if you want the dish to be lighter on the palate and less on the tongue.

A cup of water. You can add more or less depending on how soft you want the mushrooms to get.

2 cloves, chopped finely in case you do not have a garlic press on hand.

1 tablespoon of butter for cooking, and another 1/4 cup for sautéing. If you are vegan or allergic to dairy products, you can use olive oil instead. Olive oil is also very good for cooking as it tastes very well with mushrooms as well as other food items in your diet plan.

How To Cook Mushrooms In Water

You can also boil the mushrooms in a pot of water for about 5-6 minutes, and then add them to the pan with a small amount of butter. You don’t need to cook them a lot, just enough so that they are soft. Butter gives a wonderful flavor to the mushrooms and makes them taste rich. If they look brown on top or bottom, turn off the heat and add another teaspoon of butter on top.

Who should avoid eating mushrooms?

Keeping in mind that the following list of foods is not complete, there are a few mushrooms that you should avoid if you want to stay healthy. These foods should be avoided by people who are on the diet plan:

Mushrooms and other fungus containing food items can trigger symptoms of an allergic reaction in some people. If you have a mild allergy or intolerance, it is advisable to abstain from eating mushrooms.

Mushrooms are a potential source for toxic or carcinogenic substances. A study shows that a certain type of toxin accumulates in mushrooms when they are raised in contaminated water. So if you are on the diet plan for cancer prevention or any other type of cancer treatment, it is better to stay away from eating mushrooms and other fungus containing food items. Mushrooms can also be potentially acted as harmful chemicals to your body if you eat them frequently because of the toxins present in them.

How to boil mushrooms in water

You need to start off by boiling the water with cayenne pepper, lemon juice, and soy sauce. These ingredients are high in salt and give a wonderful flavor to the water you will use to cook the mushrooms. These seasonings also help you control how much salt you want to add later on in your dish. Simmer these ingredients for about 2 minutes and then strain them out.

Next, you need to finely chop the onions and garlic. Put one teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder in a pan alongside 3 tablespoons of butter, and sauté them. Add the mushrooms to this mixture. Let them simmer for about 8 minutes with a lid on the pan. You don’t need to add any more salt or flavor here because you already added seasoning to the water. Add the finely chopped garlic cloves to this mixture.

Then, add the well-strained mushroom mixture from the pot with the water to the pan. Cover it and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Then, you are ready to serve your dish of mushrooms.

This recipe for cooking mushrooms is preferred by me because I have found cooking them in this way makes their flavor more potent, unlike when they are boiled in water alone.
